Warriors News: Stephen Curry Looking To Improve On His Defense

By Josh DhaniFounderGolden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry had a solid season in 2013, leading his team to the second round of the NBA Playoffs and putting up big numbers throughout the year.Curry looks to improve upon that for the upcoming 2013-14 season, as the Warriors have championship aspirations come next June. One thing Curry looks to improve on is his defense. Curry has long been criticized for it, and he looks to prove all his doubters wrong as he makes the next step to being top point guard in the league."No excuses. It’s definitely possible," Curry told Marcus Thompson of the San Jose Mercury News when asked on if it's possible to be dominant on offense and defense. "When I’m in the game, I’m not really thinking, ‘I’m tired. Let me milk it on defense.’ I’ve just got to dig deep. That’s what you prepare in the summer for, to battle through fatigue like that. So I think it is possible. I’m not going to be defensive player of the year. But hopefully I can be top 10 (among point guards) and be able to disrupt some of the best point guards in the world."Many have gone as far as to say to Curry is a liability on defense, but things like that from pundits don't really bother Curry."I don’t really care. I know I can. I know I’m capable of it. I know I’ve shown it. I’m not a liability on the defensive end at all, I don’t think."Curry, in fact, was called an "elite" defender by head coach Mark Jackson not too long ago.If Curry can show his major improvements on the defensive side of the ball this season, there's no question he's a top 3 or 5 point guard in the NBA by season's end, if he's not already. FootBasket.com

Did You Do Everything on Your List? Feedback Friday...

We are nearing the home stretch of summer vacation around here, and I think some of you in southern states have already gone back to school.  It's bittersweet...We looked at the things left on our list to cram in before the end of next week and, as always, it seems like we ran out of time before we could get it all done.We still have kayaking, sleeping outside in a tent, and going to a water park on our list. It's Feedback Friday...What things are still left on your summer to-do list?

Britain's War on Freedom

Britain's War on Freedomby Stephen LendmanArguably America, Israel and Britain are the developed world's most repressive states. Democracy's a convenient illusion. It exists in name only.Police state ruthlessness reflects policy. It's not new. It's worse than ever now. Modern technology makes it easy. It's used oppressively. It targets ordinary people. It's done for any reason or none at all.On August 18, UK authorities detained Glenn Greenwald's partner, David Miranda. Washington was conspiratorially involved. It didn't surprise. Both countries operate lawlessly. They partner against freedom. They're waging war on fundamental rights. They want them entirely destroyed. They want unchallenged power. They'll stop at nothing to get it.Miranda was held incommunicado for nine hours. He was denied legal counsel. A counterterrorism law pretext was used to do so. He was in transit from Berlin to Rio de Janeriro. He threatened no one. He violated no laws. His laptop, cell phone, camera, memory sticks, DVDs and game consoles were confiscated. It was done lawlessly. Police states operate this way. Britain matches some of the worst. It's waging war on social justice. It wants freedom destroyed. It wants opposition to anti-populist repressiveness eliminated. Lawless crackdowns target Muslims. False terrorism charges follow. Neoliberal harshness is official policy. So is sweeping secrecy.Greenwald called detaining his partner "a failed attempt at intimidation." I'll have the opposite effect, he said. Virtually never are in transit passengers detained like Miranda.Schedule 7 of Britain's Terrorism Act says "fewer than 3 people in every 10,000 are examined as they pass through UK borders." Over 97% of examinations last under an hour. Individuals are questioned regarding possible involvement "in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism."Miranda didn't enter Britain. He was en route to Rio. Targeting him was unrelated to terrorism. It was intimidation. It was harassment. Downing Street was directly involved. It sent a message. The best of investigative journalism's threatened. Authorities want it entirely eliminated.Miranda was released uncharged. Journalists, editors, human rights lawyers and civil libertarians expressed outrage over what happened. Doing so reflects police state harshness.According to human rights lawyers Gareth Peirce:"However widely the authorities try to construe the act, and however widely they use and abuse its parameters, it was never meant to facilitate an ambitious intrusion into the rightly protected work of investigative journalists."Shami Chakrabarti heads the Liberty civil rights group. Detaining Miranda "was possible due to the breathtakingly broad schedule 7 power," she said. It "requires no suspicion." It's "routinely abused.""People are held for long periods, subject to strip searches, saliva swabbing and confiscation of property - all without access to a publicly funded lawyer." "Liberty is already challenging this law in the court of human rights but MPs disturbed by this latest scandal should repeal it without delay."National Union of Journalists secretary general Michelle Stanistreet called Miranda's detention "a gross misuse of the law." "Journalists no longer feel safe exchanging even encrypted messages by email and now it seems they are not safe when they resort to face-to-face meetings."Society of Editors executive director Bob Satchwell called Britain's action "another case of disproportionate reaction by authorities.""Journalism may be embarrassing and annoying for governments, but it is not terrorism."Detaining Miranda reflects "an attempt to intimidate a journalist and his news organisation that is simply informing the public of what is being done by authorities in their name"."It is another example of a dangerous tendency that the initial reaction of authorities is to assume that journalists are bad, when in fact they play an important part in any democracy."UK Metropolitan police lied saying:"Holding and properly using intelligence gained from such stops is a key part of fighting crime, pursuing offenders and protecting the public."Police states justify lawlessness this way. Amnesty International called detaining Miranda "unwarranted revenge tactics." Doing so was based solely on his relationship to Greenwald. On August 20, London's Financial Times headlined "UK official told Guardian newspaper to destroy files," saying:"A senior British government official demanded the destruction of files held by the Guardian newspaper related to the US National Security Agency's mass monitoring of phone and internet use."Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger discussed it in his article headlined "David Miranda, schedule 7 and the danger that all reporters now face."Rusbridger was contacted by an official claiming to represent Prime Minister David Cameron's views."There followed two meetings in which he demanded the return or destruction of all the material we were working on," he said. "The tone was steely, if cordial, but there was an implicit threat that others within government and Whitehall favoured a far more draconian approach."Downing Street didn't comment."The mood toughened just over a month ago," said Rusbridger. It was "when (he) received a phone call from the centre of government telling (him): 'You've had your fun. Now we want the stuff back.' " "There followed further meetings with shadowy Whitehall figures. The demand was the same: hand the Snowden material back or destroy it." "I explained that we could not research and report on this subject if we complied with this request. The man from Whitehall looked mystified. 'You've had your debate. There's no need to write any more.' ""During one of these meetings I asked directly whether the government would move to close down the Guardian's reporting through a legal route - by going to court to force the surrender of the material on which we were working." "The official confirmed that, in the absence of handover or destruction, this was indeed the government's intention."Rusbridger explained "one of the more bizarre moments in the Guardian's long history." Two Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) security experts "over(saw) the destruction of hard drives in the Guardian's basement just to make sure there was nothing in the mangled bits of metal which could possibly be of any interest to passing Chinese agents." " 'We can call off the black helicopters,' joked one as we swept up the remains of a MacBook Pro."Whitehall was satisfied, said Rusbridger. Destroying Guardian material was a "pointless piece of symbolism," he said. Doing so reflects digital age ignorance. Cyberspace is forever. Once out, it can't be erased."We will continue to do patient, painstaking reporting on the Snowden documents," said Rusbridger. "(W)e just won't do it in London. The seizure of Miranda's laptop, phones, hard drives and camera will similarly have no effect on Greenwald's work."His "work has undoubtedly been troublesome and embarrassing for western governments." "But, as the debate in America and Europe has shown, there is considerable public interest in what his stories have revealed about the right balance between security, civil liberties, freedom of speech and privacy." "He has raised acutely disturbing questions about the oversight of intelligence; about the use of closed courts; about the cosy and secret relationship between government and vast corporations; and about the extent to which millions of citizens now routinely have their communications intercepted, collected, analysed and stored."Britain, America and other Western states want information on their repressive spying kept secret. Journalists understand.Rusbridger wonders how many truly realize the "absolute threat" they face. Total surveillance is official policy. So is suppressing information about it.It's becoming increasingly "impossible for journalists to have confidential sources," said Rusbridger.Journalists "who denigrate Snowden or say reporters should trust the state may one day have a cruel awakening."They may be targeted. What they report may be attacked. They'll be prevented from doing their job. They'll be silenced. They may be wrongfully charged. Prosecutions may follow. At least they'll avoid "Heathrow transit lounges," added Rusbridger.Gwendolen Morgan represents Miranda. She's suing on his behalf. She seeks judicial review. She wants assurance that property police wrongfully seized won't be examined. She demands to know if it's been passed on to others. If so, to whom, why, and whether they compromised Miranda's privacy. She wants an immediate response. Otherwise she'll petition Britain's High Court Wednesday.Miranda said police "threaten(ed) (him) all the time…(They said he'd) be put in jail if (he) didn't cooperate.""They "treated (him like) a criminal or someone about to attack the UK. It was exhausting and frustrating, but (he) knew (he did nothing) wrong."A Final CommentMass surveillance crossed the line. It's getting worse. It's unrelated to national security. It has nothing to do with preventing terrorism. It's for control, espionage and intimidation.Rule of law principles no longer matter. They're null and void. They lie in history's dustbin. Police states operate extrajudicially. They do so with impunity. No one's safe. Everyone's potentially vulnerable. Doing the right thing risks trouble. Freedom's on the chopping block for elimination. A previous article quoted political philosopher Montesquieu (1689 - 1755) once saying:"There is no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of law and in the name of justice."Police state lawlessness is official US/UK policy. So is unconstitutional surveillance. Freedom's more illusion than reality. It's incrementally disappearing altogether. Both countries aren't fit to live in. They're on a fast track to tyranny. It's close to full-blown. Everyone's watched. Their phone calls are monitored. Their emails are read. Their financial, medical and other personal information is compromised. Satellites watch them from space. NSA and GCHQ do it their way. Cameras surveille them on city streets. They do so from lampposts. They do it in public buildings, shopping malls and open spaces. Britain does it from high-tech trash bins. Big Brother's omnipresent. Soon it may show up in private residences. Cameras monitor residents in this writer's building. It's done intrusively. They're in elevators and common areas. Some are visible. Others are hidden. They're everywhere.Everyone's watched outside their front doors. Perhaps doing it inside's coming. Police states operate this way.Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago. A's minor leaguer strikes out on one pitch

The Corpus Christi Hooks (Houston Astros) took on the Midland Rock Hounds (Oakland A's) in Double-A baseball action on Friday night. Rock Hounds third baseman Vinnie Carticala struck out on one pitch. Wait, that's not possible. How can you strike out on one pitch? Did the pitcher have that good of a fastball? No, what happened in this incident is what often happens in sports. People step out of their roles and nonsense ensues. Watch the video of the at-bat below (email subscribers click here).Yes, you saw what you saw. The at-bat was over in less than 30 seconds. Is what the umpire did even allowed in baseball? Unfortunately, it is. The umpire invoked Rule 6.02 (c) which reads:If the batter refuses to take his position in the batter's box during his time at bat, the umpire shall call a strike on the batter. The ball is dead and no runners may advance. After the penalty, the batter may take his proper position and the regular ball and strike count shall continue. If the batter does not take his proper position before three strikes have been called, the batter shall be declared out.Comment: The umpire shall give the batter a reasonable opportunity to take his proper position in the batter's box after the umpire has called a strike pursuant to Rule 6.02 (c) and before the umpire calls a successive strike pursuant to Rule 6.02 (c).Catricala struck out and was thrown out of the game in less than 30 seconds. Usually, I'm a staunch defender of officials, but baseball often has issues with its umpires wanting to be the stars of the games. The theatrics with strike counts and out calls are mildly entertaining. However, no one wants to see an umpire throw his weight around because he doesn't like a player taking exception to a bloated interpretation of the strike zone.It wasn't as if Catricala started a full-blown argument with the umpire. He said something, then stepped out of the batter's box, readjusted his gloves and prepared to step back in. Catricala didn't even realize that the umpire had called a second strike on him. Before another five seconds had passed, a third strike was called and the umpire ejected Catricala as soon as he turned around.Calling a professional baseball game was not enough for this umpire. He was determined to become a part of the show. Every national highlight show had this guy featured as the umpire who used one of baseball's little-known rules. Awesome! It would also be good for him to take a second look at the rule regarding the Strike Zone. It's the area over the plate from a batter's letters to his knees. Just making a friendly suggestion.

The Diary of Ensign Holt ~ Ghosts on Deck

Previously ~ My CaptainJudy Reyes asLt. Ana Vasquez"Afternoon, Ensign," Lt. Vasquez greeted Alice as she walked through the doors of the Science Lab.  "We're approaching a nebula which is home to at least three planetoids; our ETA is 1642 hours.  The Captain's given approval to collect samples via transporter."Ever since the reality of their situation had sunken in, temporary officers like Alice found themselves taking over officers who killed during the anomaly which brought the ship into the Delta Quadrant.  For example, she hadn't initially been assigned to do any work in Voyager's Science Lab, but after the death of Ensign Walsh, she'd rather seamlessly assumed the role. And despite herself, her heart rate increased when Vasquez mentioned "nebula" and "planetoids."  No offense to the dead officer who previously held this position, but this was a sweet gig.  In many ways, it was exactly the sort of job Alice was hoping to have aboard the Equinox. Alice Holt"What class are they?" Alice asked.  She was a sucker for nebulae and she was particularly obsessed with ones that had planetoids.  She often wondered what it be like to live on a dark planet, shrouded from the sun, seeing only moving swathes of color in the sky."Preliminary scans show they're Class J planetoids," Vasquez replied, leaning over her microscope, no doubting examining some rare, space-borne bacteria.  "No life signs of any sort, which is to be expected since there aren't any suns, no water, no breathable atmosphere...but the nebula itself is very beautiful, very colorful, and filled with viable omicron particles.  You game?"Alice grinned.  I love being a nerd.******After her shift ended at 1900 hours, Alice walked down the corridor to her quarters.  She had to admit she really liked these Intrepid-class starships; they weren't as spacious or luxurious as the Galaxy- and Constitution-class ships, but they were still very comfortable.  The rooms were colored in the moderate shades of blue and gray, standard issue.  Instead of being moody, the colors projected a sort of military elegance, making Alice finally feel like a grown-up.Voyager crew quarters with furnitureBut still...whenever she walked into her quarters there was this subtle chill, this eerie quiet which greeted and rattled her every time.  She had shared this place with someone.  Granted, all of her deceased roommate's things were removed and put in storage, including her bed, and now there was this...emptiness which Alice felt compelled to fill and soon.Voyager crew quarters without furnitureYes...I'm a nerd.  That's the whole point. No offense to the dead, but she need to move on, and she couldn't do so feeling obligated to respect the space of someone who was no longer there.Plum-colored curtains.  Silver gray rugs.  An blue runner for the table.  Some replicated glass art.  Anything to make the room hers and wholly hers.Until - God forbid - the Captain assigned someone to her room again. The door beeped, jolting Alice from her thoughts."Come in," she called.Harry KimTo her surprise, Ensign Harry Kim walked in, holding an elegant glass vase.  It's shape was that of a twisting rectangle which wasn't really Alice's style, but it was somewhat sophisticated and very..."Starfleet."It was just the sort of thing a full-fledged officer would have in her quarters."House-warming present," he explained with a slightly shy, awkward look.  "When I was at the Academy, I lost a roommate to a training exercise.  Our room never felt the same again.""Thank you," Alice smiled, accepting the vase and placing it squarely in the middle of her tiny dining table."My shift ended thirty minutes ago," Harry began tentatively.  "Tom and I were going to play pool in Holodeck One.  You game?"He really was a handsome man.  He had such smooth skin, emotive eyes, and soft-looking lips.  In another time and place, she'd gladly have gone wherever he invited. The infamous vaseBut Harry Kim was what Alice intuitively knew to be an Untouchable.  Contrary to Janeway's insinuation, Kim wasn't like other "fresh out" Ensigns.  He was wasn't scraping plasma manifolds below deck somewhere, or studying lab samples.  Upon graduation, he'd been assigned as a bridge officer, with his own quarters and a fairly high level of authority.  The fact that the Captain knew him by name signified she'd already developed an attachment to him, and though he didn't realize, he'd soon have her ear.So if anything were to go wrong - and Alice already knew it would - it would adversely impact her career and she couldn't have that."Actually," she replied casually, though her mind was whirling for just the right excuse, "I was going to head over to Holodeck Two to try out one of those flight tutorials you mentioned.  I'm really looking forward to trying my hand at piloting," Alice added, even though she had very little interest in piloting. He smiled kindly enough, but she could see the subtle disappointment in his eyes."I'll leave it you to then.  But if you change your mind, you know where to find me."***"Computer, is Holodeck Two in use?""Negative.""Show me the list flight tutorials, Level 1."There were dozens, which she hadn't expected.  Each one had a different instructor and was located in a different star system, some in the Gamma Quadrant, some in the Beta Quadrant, most in the Alpha Quadrant."Computer, describe the Olois System.""Trinary star system.  Eight planets.  Seventeen moons.""And the Antreka System?""Unary star system.  Six planets.  Ten moons.""What about Sigma Eridon?""Binary star system.  Four planets, three moons.  The Assynian Nebula.""And we have a winner," Alice nodded.  "Computer, designate this program as my own, Ensign authorization Alice-Theta-7.  Title: Holt Simulation Level 1.""Acknowledged.""Begin."The gray metallic doors opened, and Alice stepped onto the tiny bridge of a Class 2 shuttle.Next ~ Dimaya
