Sox character study

If losing builds character, the White Sox should have an abundance of that quality by now.

Saturday night's 1-0 loss to the Royals at U.S. Cellular Field left the Sox 21 games below .500. They have have been a major disappointment.

"It has not been the greatest season," first baseman Paul Konerko said. "On a bunch of different levels it has been a struggle. You just have to grind through as best you can. That's where we are, and you just have to find the joy in that."

A few players have come and gone already, and reports indicate at least a few more could be headed out of town by Wednesday's trade deadline.

"We can't look at that as an excuse," Konerko said. "Other teams have had injuries or have had up and down movements. It hasn't been too out of sorts with that. It has just been out of sorts with the results."

Sox manager Robin Ventura is trying to make the best of a difficult situation.

"As far as it being easy, hard, whatever, you still have to do what you think is right and find a way to kind of make it fun," he said. "It's harder at certain times than others."

The Sox have lost eight of their last 11 games.

Ventura says there is much to learn about the team during tough times.

"You find out about everybody," he said. "It's not just players, but coaches and everybody else and how they go about it. Attitude and things like that."

Catch as catch can: Ventura expects professionalism between catchers Tyler Flowers and Josh Phegley, who made his big league debut July 5 at Tampa Bay.

"Flo is a pro, and he understands what's going on," Ventura said. "They both understand. You understand it has to be competitive. Each guy wants to play, you get that part of it. But if you're doing something that is not trying to help us win, then that's going to be a negative."

Error of their ways: The Sox eclipsed their 2012 error total Friday when they were charged with their 71st miscue.

"You always want it to be clean and as good as it can be," Ventura said of his team's defense. "There are a lot of winning teams that do a lot of things wrong. But because they won those games, people don't focus on it as much."

Leaving OUP (and which Jane Austen character are you?)

It feels as though it's only just started, but my time as blog editor of OxfordWords came to an end yesterday.  I was there on maternity cover, and the lovely woman who'd had her beautiful baby came back to the fore.  Although I was only there for just under six months, I've made some very dear friends, and was incredibly touched by the leaving gifts and cards I got.  As you'll see from my selection, I certainly didn't keep my love of the Queen (and kittens) quiet...Notice also that my friend Fiona is feeding my Agatha Christie habit - and deliberately picked one with a dog on the cover, because of our long-running feud of cats v. dogs.  (This feud manifested itself almost entirely in sending each other cute pictures of our preferred animal.)Luckily for me, they say I can still write for OxfordWords now and then, as an external writer, and I have one in the pipeline which isn't at all literary.  Today, though, to commemorate the anniversary of Jane Austen's death, my parting gift to OxfordWords was a 'Which Jane Austen character are you?' quiz - go and take it, and let me know who you ended up as!(I'm Mr. Darcy, it turns out. Since I wrote the quiz, I could be accused of making sure of this... but I actually would have preferred to be Mr. Bingley...)
